100-Year-Old WWII Veteran Honored with Free Roof in Pittsburgh
A century of courage and service was celebrated in Pittsburgh this week as Home Genius Exteriors, in partnership with Owens Corning and Purple Heart Homes, installed a brand-new roof for 100-year-old World War II Navy veteran Harold Segal at no cost to him.
Segal, who enlisted in the Navy at 18, served aboard the USS Monticello (LSD-35) transporting troops from the East Coast to Europe. Acting as the right-hand man to the ship’s doctor, he assisted in more than 100 surgical procedures at sea, often while convoys faced the lurking threat of German submarines. His four years of service left him with life-long lessons of discipline, resilience, and gratitude.
Over the course of his life, Segal has embraced those lessons—building a family with his late wife of 60 years, raising five children, and later finding companionship with Virginia, his partner of 14 years. Though his mobility is now limited, his pride in his home, his neighborhood, and his community remains steadfast.
Brent Miller, Executive Vice President of Home Genius Exteriors, emphasized the company’s pride in serving veterans like Segal. “Mr. Segal’s story is one of courage, sacrifice, and service—not only to our country, but to his family and community. It’s an honor for our team to ensure his home is safe and secure. At Home Genius Exteriors, we believe in using our work to make a real difference, and there is no greater privilege than serving those who have served us.”
This philanthropic project is part of the company’s Home Genius Cares initiative initiative, which provides support, service, and donations to local communities. With a strong commitment to veterans and military families, Home Genius Cares ensures those who served our country have safe, secure homes.
